Libraries Are More Than Just Books — They’re the Heart of a School
Your library is more than a collection of shelves and stories — it’s a hub for curiosity, connection, and creativity. When the wider school community gets involved, the library transforms into a space where students, teachers, and families feel inspired to read, learn, and collaborate.
Here are three proven, easy-to-implement ideas to draw attention to your school library and bring your community together.
1️⃣ Create Curiosity with Themed Displays
A themed display is one of the simplest ways to spark interest and start conversations.
Try ideas like:
Books That Became Movies - include QR codes linking to trailers or reviews.
Teacher’s Favourites - showcase what staff love to read and why.
Student Spotlight Reads - let students design mini-posters recommending their top picks.
Tip: Use your SmartSuite Library System to quickly pull matching books into a themed collection list — it makes curation effortless and fun.
2️⃣ Host a “Library Takeover” Day
Invite teachers, parents, or even senior students to run the library for a day. They can:
Read aloud to younger classes
Share their favourite stories
Help with cataloguing or shelving new books
This gives others a glimpse into how much librarians do behind the scenes, while also making your space feel welcoming and interactive.
Bonus idea: Share photos on your school social media with a tag like #LoveOurLibrary to amplify community engagement.
3️⃣ Partner with School Events
Your library doesn’t have to stay within its four walls.
Link up with school activities to make the library visible and relevant:
Add a Pop-Up Reading Corner to sports day or assembly mornings
Host a Book Swap Table during parent-teacher interviews
Offer a Bookmark-Making Station at the next school fair
These collaborations create lasting impressions and show that the library is an active part of school life — not a hidden gem.
☕ Spotlight: Our FSI Coffee Cart Competition
Earlier this term, FSI ran a fun initiative to celebrate school libraries doing amazing work for their communities.
The winning library was treated to a coffee cart for the morning, with every drink proudly “Sponsored by the Library.”
Teachers and parents gathered to share a cuppa, read with students, and chat with staff — some stepping inside the library for the very first time.
The result? A relaxed, connected morning that reminded everyone how the library brings people together — one story (and one coffee) at a time.
At FSI, we love helping schools celebrate their libraries — whether through powerful software like SmartSuite Library Management System or community-building initiatives like FSI Connect.
Libraries are where students discover who they are as learners. When we make those spaces visible, vibrant, and valued — the entire school community grows stronger.
